Termites in Illinois - Termite Control in IL

The Land of Lincoln is a great State to live in. However, even this far north, termites can be a problem. If you don't watch out and take steps to protect your house from infestation by termites, the results can be costly structural damage that will be a true headache to repair.

Termites in Illinois will usually be one of two species. The most common and widely ranging termite in the United States overall, is the Eastern Subterranean Termite. As the name implies, these termites dig themselves nests in the soil, below the frost line and above the water line. To infest wood, these pests need soil contact or a "bridge" of some sort between the wood and the dirt. However, they are tenacious little bugs and can slip through cracks in concrete or masonry as little as one sixteenth of an inch.

They are voracious consumers of Douglas Fir and other important structural woods. Because they prefer the softer Spring growth wood to the harder Summer growth, they often end up feeding in a pattern that completely hollows out pieces of wood while leaving an apparently intact shell on the outside. This deceptive habit makes an infestation of the little buggers even harder to detect. They like the damp, and will fill the holes they cut in wood with dam soil, leading to secondary damage to the wood. They often build mud transit tubes to cross exposed areas, say from the soil, up the foundation, to the floor joists, and these tubes are often the best sign that termites are present. Swarming in Illinois occurs in the late Spring generally, and if you see such activity around your house, its another good sign that you need to have it treated for termites.

The other common termite variety in Illinois is the Arid Land Subterranean Termite, which is smaller and better adapted to dry conditions than the Eastern variety, as the name would imply. It can even live in sand dunes These insects are similar in habits to their Eastern, and is the likely culprit in Illinois termite infestations for those living in the drier regions of Illinois.
