New York City is one of the most bed bug infested cities in the United States. New York bed bugs have been found everywhere including hotels, apartment buildings, theaters and clothing stores. If you are planning a day trip into the city, there are many ways to protect yourself from bed bugs in New York.
You may not be able to avoid bed bugs, but you can protect yourself against them. If you stay at a hotel, be sure to check your room for bed bug activity before you move your luggage into the room. A New York bed bug infestation is rampant in hotels, so you will need to be vigilant when checking for bed bugs and leave no bed unturned when inspecting your room. Keep your items up off the floor and do not unpack your suitcases into the dressers or closets.
The best way to protect yourself from New York bedbugs is to make sure that you do not infest your house with affected items that you may have unknowingly brought home. Bed bugs are very tiny and their eggs are smaller than a pin head, so you may not know if you picked them up somewhere. They could be lurking in your shopping bags or could have crawled into your coat while you were at the theater. It is best to unpack everything that you have bought on a hard surface, such as your kitchen table. Immediately take all of your clothing or other soft goods to the washing machine and wash them with hot water, then dry them on high heat. The high heat will kill the bed bug eggs. Throw out any paper shopping bags immediately. Be sure to wash the clothing that you wore to the city and never place the unwashed items on a soft surface, such as a bed or carpeting.
If you do happen to bring NY bed bugs home, you will need to call in a professional exterminator. Bed bugs can actually live almost anywhere once they get into your home, not just in mattresses. They will quickly spread by laying eggs and hiding in your headboards, nightstands, outlets and most anywhere that it is dark. Do not try to eradicate them yourself with sprays bought from home improvement stores, as these sprays will not work. Bed bugs in New York need to be dealt with professionally so that they do not spread throughout your home.
